Beginning on or after Monday, October 20, a significant road closure is set to take place in Lapel, affecting State Road 32 between County Road 825 W. and County Road 700 W. The closure is necessitated by a box culvert replacement project, which is expected to last approximately two months. To minimize disruptions, an official detour route has been designated, utilizing State Road 9, I-69, and State Road 13 to help drivers navigate around the closure. The Lapel Stony Creek Township Fire Territory kicked off Fire Prevention Week with a visit to Lapel Elementary and Lapel Middle School. Firefighters spent the day teaching students essential fire safety lessons, including cooking safety tips, the importance of sleeping with bedroom doors closed, and why smoke detectors save lives. Students also learned when and how to call 911, and were reassured that firefighters are friends, not to be feared.

During the visit, students had the opportunity to get an up-close look at the fire apparatus and the gear that firefighters wear to stay safe while fighting fires. The day was filled with hands-on learning and important safety messages that can save lives. The firefighters covered a range of topics, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of fire safety and prevention.

The Lapel Stony Creek Township Fire Territory is proud to have had the opportunity to educate and engage with the students at Lapel Elementary and Lapel Middle School. By teaching students about fire safety and prevention, the fire territory is helping to keep the community safe, one student at a time. The visit was a fun and educational experience for all involved, and the fire territory is grateful to have had the chance to partner with the schools to promote fire safety and awareness. As of Saturday, October 4, 2025, a county-wide burn ban has been issued in Madison County by the Madison County Commissioners, in collaboration with the Madison County Emergency Management & Homeland Security Agency and local fire departments. Currently, 17 other counties in Indiana are also under a similar burn ban.

A Declaration of Local Emergency has been issued by the Principal Executive Officer of Madison County due to ongoing drought conditions, which pose a significant risk of widespread fire hazards. This declaration is in accordance with Indiana Code sections 10-14-3-29(a)(1) and 36-2-2-2, which grant the President of the County Board of Commissioners the authority to declare a local emergency.

The burn ban prohibits the following activities in Madison County:

* Campfires and recreational fires, unless they are enclosed in a fire ring with dimensions of 23 inches in diameter and 6 inches in height, or larger
* Open burning of any kind using conventional fuel, such as wood or other combustible materials, except for grills fueled by charcoal briquettes or propane
* Burning of debris, including timber or vegetation, resulting from construction activities or windstorm debris
* Use of burn barrels for open burning at residential structures

However, charcoal from permitted grills can be used, but the charcoal must be thoroughly extinguished before being removed from the grill.

The Declaration of Local Emergency will remain in effect until it is rescinded by the Madison County Board of Commissioners, who will reevaluate the situation every seven days. All residents are required to comply with the burn ban and cooperate with public officials and disaster services.

The issuance of this burn ban is a precautionary measure to protect the safety of citizens and property in Madison County. By taking this step, the county aims to mitigate the risk of wildfires and ensure public safety during the ongoing drought conditions.
