Heating Fire Safety: Preventing Home Fires with Simple Precautions
Heating fires have been trending downward since the early 1980s, yet they remained the second leading cause of home fires in 2021, with an estimated 32,200 incidents reported to US fire departments. These fires resulted in significant losses, including approximately 190 deaths, 625 injuries, and $442 million in property damage.
To minimize the risk of heating fires, it’s essential to keep anything that can burn at a safe distance – at least 3 feet – from all heat sources, including fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators, space heaters, and candles. Additionally, never use an oven to heat your home, as this can be a serious fire hazard. When using space heaters, make sure to turn them off when leaving the room or going to bed to prevent accidents.
Regular maintenance of heating equipment and chimneys is also crucial. Have them cleaned and inspected annually by a professional to ensure they are in good working condition and function safely. By following these simple precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of heating fires and keep your home and loved ones safe.

Fire Safety Fun: Lapel Stony Creek Twp. Fire Territory Visits the Caterpillar Class
The Caterpillar Class had an exciting day with a special visit from the Lapel Stony Creek Twp. Fire Territory! The firefighters came to talk to us about fire safety, and we all gathered in the sanctuary to hear a story and learn more about their important work.
We got to see the uniform that a firefighter wears, which was really cool, and then we took a tour of the fire truck and ambulance. The kids were thrilled to get up close and personal with the vehicles and learn about all the equipment on board.
As a special treat, each child received their very own fire hat and coloring book, which they were all thrilled about. We want to extend a big thank you to the fire department for taking the time to visit us and teach our students about fire safety. This is an annual event that the kids look forward to all year, and we’re so grateful for the opportunity to learn from these brave men and women.

Madison County Extends Burn Ban for 7 More Days Amid Ongoing Drought Conditions
As of October 10, 2025, the burn ban in Madison County has been extended for an additional 7 days due to ongoing drought conditions.
A Declaration of Local Emergency has been issued by the Principal Executive Officer of Madison County, citing the authority granted by I.C. §10-14-3-29(a)(1) and I.C. §36-2-2-2, which permits the President of the County Board of Commissioners to declare a local emergency. The decision to extend the burn ban is based on the finding that Madison County remains at risk of widespread fire hazards due to the persistent drought conditions.
In accordance with this declaration, a state of local emergency exists in Madison County, Indiana. Effective immediately, the following activities are prohibited:
* Campfires and other recreational fires, unless they are enclosed in a fire ring with dimensions of at least 23 inches in diameter and 6 inches high
* Open burning of any kind using conventional fuel such as wood or other combustible materials, with the exception of grills fueled by charcoal briquettes or propane
* Burning of debris, including timber or vegetation, resulting from building construction activities or windstorm debris
* Use of burn barrels for any open burning at residential structures
Additionally, charcoal from permitted grills must be thoroughly extinguished before being removed. All residents are directed to comply with necessary emergency measures, cooperate with public officials, and obey lawful directions from properly identified officers.
This burn ban will remain in effect until rescinded by the Madison County Board of Commissioners, who will reevaluate the declaration every 7 days. The declaration has been duly signed by John Richwine, President of the Madison County Board of Commissioners, and will be filed in the Office of the Clerk of Madison County, posted in various locations throughout the county, and provided to local news media.
