BREAKING: High-Speed Chase Ends in Dramatic River Jump
A 30-year-old driver from Hartford City, Indiana, is under police supervision in a local hospital after a high-speed chase ended in a daring river jump Sunday evening. According to the Indiana State Police, the incident began when a trooper attempted to pull over a speeding white Volkswagen on Interstate 69, just north of Anderson, around 5 p.m.
The driver, identified as Sebastian Southerland, fled southbound and led the trooper through Chesterfield and into Anderson, eventually speeding onto 9th Street and crashing through the dead-end street to the White River. Southerland stopped the car and bailed out on foot, forcing the passenger, a female, to stay behind.
The trooper pursued Southerland on foot, and after a short foot chase, Southerland jumped into the water. Authorities reported that the river was swollen from recent storms, and the water was moving rapidly. Southerland was swept down the river a short distance before clinging to a pile of brush. The Anderson Fire Department responded with water rescue equipment and pulled Southerland from the water.
He was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. A firefighter who jumped into the water to make the rescue was also treated for injuries but was later released.
Southerland faces multiple charges, including Resisting Arrest with a Vehicle, Resisting Arrest Causing Injury, Reckless Driving, Operating While Intoxicated Endangerment, and Operating While Intoxicated – Controlled Substance. The Madison County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision, and the incident remains under investigation.
